Why a page on "Crime Prevention"
I was often gulity of saying that I would never be a victim, that nothing bad would ever happen to me, I have always thought of myself as being rather careful, but it can happen to any of us. The best way to avoid being a victim is to be more knowledgeable, and aware at all times.
May 6, 1999, a day that changed my sister and that of our entire family forever. "Sandra Jordan-Pellot" became a victim of a violent crime, that day she went to work just as she always did, but this day would be a day that would change all of our lives. She was the owner of Tobacco Shop, that was located in Jacksonville, Fla. Two young boys entered her shop, and began looking around, she sensed something wasn't right, they held her at gun poing, demanded all of her cash from the cash register, robbed her of merchandise and her new truck, and her purse. She did all that they asked, but before they left, they shot her in the back.
Sandra went through, lot's of surgeries and suffered alot of pain, she never returned home, and she never walked again, she was a quadriplegic, Sandra died July 27, 2000 after 14 months of trying to survive. She left behind so many people that loved and cared for her, Her life was taken beacuse of two young boys, I pray this will never happen to any of you or someone that you love.
There are many ways of being victims, not all are so tragic, but still are hard to deal with. On January 10, 2000 one of my closest friend became a victim of a crime, she had her purse snatched in a Wal-Mart in Jacksonville, Fla.
So, you can see that I feel very personal about my message to others, and why its important to me to share with others all that I can by helping them to protect themselves and maybe prevent them from being a victim of a crime. I hope that these few saftey tips will make each of you stop and think!!
HERE ARE A FEW HELPFUL SAFETY TIPS,
1. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.
2. The best way not to have a purse stolen, is simple not to carry one; you can use a waist or a neck pouch under your clothing.
3. Never put yourself in danger by walking in dark alleys or dark passageways, avoid strangers or being alone in places that may be unsafe.
4. When driving, always keep your doors locked, & when stopped at signs, & red lights, keep your windows closed.
5. Did you know your elbows are your strongest part of you body?? You can jab someone with your elbow.
SAFE GUARD YOUR IDENTITY
6. It would be wise not to ever carry your Social Security Card on your personal being, keep it at home in a safe place.
7. Never leave credit / debit receipts around.
8. Never sign the back of your credit cards, all Stores wont ask you for your Drivers License, even though they should, I usually will put CID, that way they see there is no signature and ask me for proper identification. I find its no trouble to show them my drivers license, I would rather be safe, than sorry later.
9. While out shopping, when returning to your vehicle with lots of packages, move the car to another location, incase you are being watched.
PURSE SNATCHING
Have you ever gone shopping and see someone turn their back on a shopping cart with their purse just sitting there??? I have, almost every trip I take to a store, I will turn an isle and right there , waiting for a theift to take it, is a purse, it saddens me, and I am quick to tell them to watch their purse. Most of us are trusting, and that is what the potiental crimminal is counting on.
Purse snatchings are very common, and happen all the time, please don't allow yourself, a family member or a friend to become a victim.
Thank you, and be safe
